Derbyshire Unearthed Part 2: Coins and Coin Hoards

Museum and Art Gallery

From 10 February 2018 to 22 April 2018

As per opening times at Museum and Art Gallery

This two part exhibition celebrates the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the Treasure Act and the founding of the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

In this second part of the exhibition visitors can see six hoards of coins found in Britain from Roman times to the 19th century. These hoards include: the Ashbourne Hoard and three Cromford Dollars alongside individual coins found by the public. The Ashbourne Hoard consists of two extremely rare gold coins depicting the Roman general Carausius, who broke away from the Roman Empire to set up his own empire in Britain. One of these coins is on loan from the British Museum especially for this exhibition.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a project across England and Wales to record archaeological objects discovered by the public and make them accessible to researchers and the public. To learn more, visit www.finds.org.uk.
